JAQUES:
ALL THE WORLD’S A STAGE
ALL THE WORLD’S A STAGE
[We see newlywed ROSALIND and ORLANDO grow older.
They’re replaced by GRANDMA ROSALIND and GRANDPA ORLANDO, older versions of themselves.]
THEN WE GET OLDER
OUR MAKE-UP FADES AWAY
OUR VOICES BECOME TIRED
AFTER ALL THE LINES WE DID OUR BEST TO SAY
THEN OUR FINALE
STRUGGLING TO MAKE SENSE OF ALL WE’VE KNOWN
WE LOOK AROUND THE THEATER
AND REALIZE WE’VE NEVER BEEN ALONE
[GRANDMA ROSALIND and GRANDPA ORLANDO fade away, leaving JAQUES alone.]
ALL THE WORLD’S A STAGE
WHEN THE CURTAIN FALLS AT LAST
THIS SHOW MUST STILL GO ON
WE LEAVE A GHOSTLIGHT FOR THE ONES WHO’LL START AGAIN WHEN WE ARE GONE
WE LEAVE BEHIND THE SCENES AND STEPS WE’VE LEARNED ALONG THE WAY
AND HOPE THEY LIVE TO SEE A BETTER VERSION OF THE PLAY
[JAQUES is replaced by a young girl, LITTLE JAQUES, who takes her pen and paper.]
LITTLE JAQUES:
ALL THE WORLD’S A STAGE
AND EVERYBODY’S IN THE SHOW
NOBODY’S A PRO
ALL THE WORLD’S A STAGE
AND EVERY DAY WE PLAY OUR PART
ACTING OUT OUR HEART
YEAR BY YEAR, WE GROW
LEARNING AS WE GO
TRYING TO TELL A STORY WE CAN FEEL
HOW DO YOU MAKE THE MAGIC REAL?

Dave is the master of writing endings that instill an ethereal feeling of hope within the person who experiences it. The Field is a perfect cap to the end of Octet and by itself it fills me with the calm tranquility of acceptance in situations where I feel like everything is wrong, like I'm unworthy of everything I have and happiness itself. It always reminds me to not waste anymore of my weird and precious time, arguing the nonsense of the wheel. playton

This album: wow. It's perfect--not just because of the wonderfully grounded-in-the-quotidian but also numinous lyrics. Not just because of the gorgeous and musically meaningful arrangements or the superb artistry. Perfect also because it miraculously captures our individual and national grief, dread, and, maybe, hope-- or at least the sun on a hazelnut tree. A work of art from a humane artist who is an compassionate and careful observer of our time and place. Thank you! marymcd
